Today it was about 25 degrees when I woke up. It was a quick reminder that we are entering the cold months in Connecticut and that there are some basic things we can do to protect our homes.
1) Be sure your gutters are clear. There have been a lot of leaves blowing around and if your gutters are clogged they can create an ice dam. If the water freezes in the gutter in can crawl back up under the roof shingles and then melt and leak into your attic causing all kinds of problems.
2) Check Plumbing. First off, be sure you know how to turn off your water main in case there is a major leak. Double check that if you have any exposed pipes that they are insulated. If you do leave the home for an extended period of time, be sure you set the thermostat to at least 55 degrees.
